Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls

Where the Red Fern GrowsTo me, Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls is one of those special books that I not only own, but also have read many times.  I can’t even put a finger on exactly why this book is so special to me.  The story takes place in the Ozarks during the Depression. The main character is ten-year-old Billy who has saved his money for two entire years in order to buy the coonhound pups that he has so desperately wanted.  Imagine saving your money for two years to buy something!  I especially like the wonderful relationship between Billy and his beloved dogs, Ol’Dan and Li’l Ann. They have adventure upon adventure together, some of them quite dangerous, when they go out at night hunting for raccoons.  Especially exciting is the annual coon-hunting contest that Billy, Ol’Dan and Li’l Ann enter.  This moving story of love between a boy and his dogs never fails to make me laugh as well as cry.

Incidentally, the author, Wilson Rawls, wrote this book from some of his own experiences growing up on a farm in the Ozarks and spending much of his time with his own special companion, a bluetick hound. You might want to give this great book a try – especially if you are a dog lover who likes to read an exciting tale!
