Bugs by the Numbers by Sharon Werner and Sarah Forss

Bugs by the NumbersThe creators of the popular title Alphabeasties and Other Amazing Types, Sharon Werner and Sarah Forss, have created this companion title. Alphabeasites uses letters to create pictures of animals. This title uses numbers to represent insects. Not only is the form of the insect drawn with numbers, but factoids about the insects are highlighted related to that number. For example, the artists chose to create a mosquito out of the number “75” because mosquitoes “can detect our breath from 75 feet away.”

This book is a visual delight, using black type to draw the predominant insect forms on each page and complimenting that with bold colors that frame the insect shape and draw the eye all over the page. Facts about the insect are spread throughout the page, making this book a nonlinear read. Given the visual appeal, this title will appeal to many girls and boys alike, and the science of bugs will definitely draw in the most reluctant readers. This book is a great choice for people looking for books about math, science or art.
